Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the initial assistance offered to a person experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge or crisis. It’s the first aid given until appropriate treatment or support are received or until the crisis resolves.
Participants learn:
- Risk factors and warning signs
- Information on common mental illnesses and substance misuse
- A 5-step action plan known as ALGEE
- The importance of cultural considerations
- Ways to reduce stigma and increase awareness
- Why language is critical to support
- Available professional and self-help resources
- An emphasis on self-care
The course is 8 training hours total; two hours online ‘pre-work’, and two 3.5 hour in-person sessions (includes breaks). All parts of the training are required, including attending both live training dates.
Participants will receive a digital manual and other materials accessible for the length of certification. MHFA certification lasts three years.
This course is open to Yale faculty, staff, postdoc associates and fellows. Space is limited to 20 participants.
