Cooking up Confidence in the Kitchen

July 1, 2026

Not enough time. Limited kitchen skills. Tired of making the same meals. Rising grocery costs. Cooking for different food preferences. Uncertainty about what’s actually healthy.

These are just a few of the common challenges that keep many of us from meal planning, meal prepping—or cooking at all.

Those barriers took center stage during From Pantry to Plate: Simple Strategies for Stress-Free Meals, where Registered Dietitian Jovan Bloise, MPH, RD, shared practical nutrition and culinary strategies to help make healthy eating feel more achievable. Hosted by Being Well at Yale, the interactive workshop focused on realistic solutions that participants could begin using right away.

Throughout the session, Jovan explained why meal planning matters, how a well-stocked pantry can simplify healthy eating, and budget-friendly ways to reduce food costs without sacrificing variety, nutrition, or flavor. He also shared a five-day meal plan that creatively cross-utilized ingredients to minimize food waste, maximize value, and keep meals interesting throughout the week. Participants engaged in thoughtful discussions about the barriers they face and exchanged practical ideas for overcoming them.

One of the highlights of the workshop was preparing fresh summer rolls together. The hands-on demonstration showed just how simple, colorful, and delicious healthy eating can be—and participants were eager to share their reactions:

“Jovan’s presentation provided a simple, approachable guide that made the process feel much less overwhelming. I left with useful strategies that I can apply in my own routine, and I enjoyed learning about healthy, realistic ways to plan meals ahead of time”

“I would have never tried this summer roll outside of here. I’m so glad I came.”

“The summer rolls looked very intimidating to make, but I was impressed with how easy they were.”

“This workshop encouraged a greater awareness of the connection between nutrition, energy, and overall well-being, and was both informative and delicious!”

The excitement in the room was unmistakable, and the experience reinforced an important takeaway: nutrition education and cooking aren’t about perfection—they’re about building the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to make sustainable choices that fit your lifestyle.

Thank you to everyone who attended, shared your experiences, and asked such thoughtful questions. And a special thank you to Jovan for his passion and dedication to educating, empowering, and inspiring healthier communities—one meal at a time.
