Make 2026 the year you get certified in Adult Mental Health First Aid and be the difference for someone in your department, family, or community!
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the initial assistance offered to a person experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge or crisis. It’s the first aid given until appropriate treatment or support are received or until the crisis resolves.
Participants learn:
- Information on common mental illnesses and substance misuse
- Risk factors and warning signs
- A 5-step action plan known as ALGEE
- The importance of cultural considerations
- Ways to reduce stigma and increase awareness
- What language is critical to support
- Available professional and self-help resources
- An emphasis on self-care
The course includes two hours online ‘pre-work’, and two 4-hour in-person sessions (includes breaks). All parts of the training are required, including attending both live training dates.
Participants will receive a digital manual as well as other materials accessible for the length of certification. MHFA certification lasts three years and then can be renewed online on one’s own. Please note, Being Well at Yale does not provide recertification.

I have already employed tools from MHFA training in both personal and professional contexts, and feel much more confident in my ability to navigate potentially sensitive situations. The training has clear value across departments.” - M&P Staff Member
